Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats Train Graveyard

Andrea and John Spirov from Inspiring Travelers share an intriguing find from their Round the World Trip, a train graveyard in Bolivia.

Most visitors to Bolivia will pass through Uyuni on their way to the incredible salt flats of the Salar de Uyuni. Another interesting site is just a few kilometres outside town: a train cemetery. On display here are the bodies of abandoned steam trains that were once used to transport the country’s vast stores of minerals. Uyuni was the site of a proposed transportation hub, though work on the rail network here was abandoned prematurely. Other pieces of train wreckage from accidents complete the collection.

Visitors can travel by rail in Bolivia on one of two railway systems. The Western Network has two lines: Expreso del sur, which is a beautiful journey with Empresa Ferroviaria Andina running from Oruro to Uyuni and further along to Villazon. From Uyuni passengers can also cross the salt flats to reach Chile. The other railway system is The Eastern Network, taking passengers from Santa Cruz to Brazil or south to the border of Argentina. • A cemetery for decaying trains…almost sad looking at it.

  • I know, if trains could talk…

  • Bizarre and beautiful. It’s hard to imagine this is a real place. It seems like something out of a surrealist painting. A great experience and fantastic photos.
    Thanks.
